Clients should be certain they understand the contract BEFORE they sign it.

One of the most frequent complaints filed by clients with the Department of the State Police Licensing Division turns out to be caused by the fact that the client either didn’t read the contract or didn’t understand the contract they were signing.

Beware of contracts that allow an agency to withdraw funds from your bank account or credit card at any time for any reason. MISA discourages its members from engaging in that type of unethical behavior.

Also request that it is clearly stated in the contract whether you expect to receive a report and how you will receive it – verbal or written. Be clear on the timeline that you expect updates, but also be reasonable. If you have a pending court date, make that known to the investigator, preferably by providing copies of the pertinent court documents.

Remember, the more information you provide, the better the agency will be able to serve you.
