2018 Legislative Updates

2018 Legislative Happenings
This year is election year in Maryland. That means we are seeing some unusual activity in Annapolis.
The General Assembly overturned the veto by Governor Hogan of the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act. That means starting February 18, 2018 your business is required to pay sick and safe leave to all employees that work 12 hours a week or more. This is a very complicated and confusing law. DLLR has been tasked with setting policy to implement the law. Since the process happened due to an override of the Governor’s veto, it will not go through the typical process of writing regulations and having a 30 day period for public comments. Watch your emails for further updates on this issue.
To see who voted to override the Governor’s veto, see the links below (Yay means they voted to override):
Vote – House Floor – Overridden (88-52) – 01/11/18
Vote – Senate Floor – Overridden (30-17) – 01/12/18
March 6th a Hearing will be held on HB 98 which will attempt to amend the Paid Sick Leave Act before the House Economics Matter Committee at 1 pm. This is the same committee that refused to delay enactment of the Paid Sick Leave Act. The Governor has also submitted a bill to try to delay implementation, but since it’s an election year it may not even get a Hearing.
March 6th is also Gun Day when the majority of gun legislation will be heard in both chambers. Interesting timing for both Hearings I would say.
Keep these things in mind when you vote in the Primary on June 26, 2018. It is easy to determine who the anti-business legislators are by looking at the override voting lists.
Below is a listing of some legislation we are following. The status is noted beside the bill numbers. The links should be active so you can look at the specifics of bills of interest.
